On January 10th in Beirut, Caffè Agonista reopened, one of the projects supported in the Lebanese capital by the WIP program. A truly extraordinary guest also attended the “reopening” celebration: the Italian Ambassador to Lebanon, Fabrizio Marcelli, who addressed the owners and the Pro Terra Sancta staff with words of encouragement and sincere appreciation.

It all began in 2018 when Wassim El Hage, until then a physiotherapist in a center caring for many young people with disabilities, opened a café—Caffè Agonista—where he employed several young people with disabilities. Among them were George Gergi, who has Down syndrome, and Farah Ballout, a young woman with autism. The experiment worked: the young people worked well and were happy, and in 2021 Wassim was able to open another Agonista in a shopping mall.

Meanwhile, the idea of launching WIP became increasingly concrete, and in Beirut applications began to be reviewed from aspiring entrepreneurs seeking help to start or strengthen their ventures. Among them were Farah and George who, perhaps encouraged by their experience at Agonista, asked to open a place of their own. The WIP staff came up with an idea: to support the Agonista project by proposing to Wassim that George and Farah become partners, with a total share of 30 percent. The owner enthusiastically accepted, and from November 2023 his business could count on WIP’s sponsorship.

However, the situation in Lebanon quickly deteriorated, and bombings forced Wassim to close. What reopened on January 10th was an Agonista still facing enormous challenges, yet continuing to resist by offering catering services and considering a new, less costly location.

Among the protagonists of Focus Live 2024 was also Work In Progress, the program sponsored by the NGO Pro Terra Sancta which, since 2022, has identified, financed, and supported entrepreneurial projects of young Lebanese.

During the three-day event organized from November 8 to 10, 2024, at the Museum of Science and Technology in Milan by Focus magazine (Mondadori), directed by Gian Maria Bazzoli, Ara Abadjan and George Daccache, founders of two startups included in the WIP program, were awarded. Despite the dramatic situation in their country, they have managed to keep moving forward.

The award they received is named after Raymond Zreick, a Focus journalist who passed away prematurely two years ago; the two entrepreneurs also received a donation offered by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

“I believe this recognition may be a small but important sign of the path taken to support the hopes of young Lebanese,” said Daniele Sacco, HR Director at Mondadori and member of the Advisory Board of Working In Progress, during the award ceremony. “Helping projects like those of Ara and George means not only contributing to entrepreneurship but also to the very future of Lebanon,” added Marco Piuri, General Manager of FNM and also a member of WIP’s Advisory Board.

Meanwhile, WIP’s commitment to Lebanon continues: the projects of the third edition will soon be officially announced, and they will receive financial support as well as technical and managerial assistance for 18 months.

The Caffè Agonista project was awarded in Milan during the event promoted by the Costruiamo il Futuro Foundation. Wassim El Hage and Daniele Sacco accepted the €5,000 prize, which was personally presented by political leader Maurizio Lupi.
